Firebird III by Gibson
Gibson released their Firebird III model in 1963 (along with the other Firebird variations). It would stay in production through
1969. Like the others, the III featured the reverse body design through 1965, and the non-reversed design thereafter.
The Firebird III features the 'neck-through-body', mahogany, with the side wings glued on. It featured two humbucking pickups through mid-1965,
then three P-90 pickups until the end of the run. It has a dotted rosewood fingerboard and banjo-style tuners (e.g., the tuners are on the underside
of the head piece). This model also features a Vibrola tailpiece. Nickel plating, tone and volume knobs for each pickup.
The III was considered the 'low-to-mid' member of the Firebird line, with the I being the most basic, the V being standard, and the
VII being considered high-end. The Firebird III retailed for $249.50. The brown-and-black Sunburst finish was the standard color,
although custom colors could be had for $15.00 more.
